  Department of Radiotherapy of Second Hospital of Jilin University, founded in 1958, is the birthplace of radiotherapy specialty in Jilin Province. Its predecessor was the Department of Radiotherapy in the Fourth Hospital of Norman Bethune Medical University (Tumor Hospital), and the first director was Professor Gongyan Chen. In1984, the Fourth Hospital of Norman Bethune Medical University was reformed, and the Department of Radiotherapy was attached to the Third Hospital of Norman Bethune Medical University. In 1995, the whole department was assigned to the Second Hospital of Norman Bethune Medical University. In 2000, Norman Bethune Medical University was merged with Jilin University, and the department was renamed Department of Radiotherapy of the Second Hospital of Jilin University. Over the years, the department has undertaken a large number of clinical, teaching and scientific research works, training a large number of professional for radiotherapy throughout the country. And a number of graduates of Radioactive Medicine major have served as directors and technical backbones in several radiodiagnosis and radiotherapy units in Jilin Province, Northeast region, and even across the country. The department is the only Radiation Therapy Oncology Continuing Medical Education Base in Jilin Province, the department is the Group leader unit of the teaching group of Radioactive Medicine major at Jilin University, the chair unit of Radiation Therapy Oncology Branch of Jilin Association of Anticancer, the chair unit of the first session of Radiation Therapy Oncology Branch of Medical Association in Changchun, the former chair unit of Oncology specialty of the Medical Association in Changchun City, as well as the key discipline of Radiation Therapy Oncology specialty in Changchun City.

  The department has a strong technical force. There are 89 medical personnel, including 24 doctors, 39 nurses, 18 therapists, 1 engineer, and 7 physicists (including 4 professors/chief physicians, 4 associate professors/associate chief physicians, 2 associate chief nurses, and 1 associate chief technician), 2 doctoral supervisors and 6 master supervisors. And 4 doctors have the experience of post-doctor, 16 people have doctorate and 13 people have master’s degree. The number of daily hospitalization of patients is 260-300, and more than 5,000 patients were admitted and treated throughout the year and the annual medical income was more than 100 million Yuan.

  The department owns a U.S. Varian IX(including OBI image system) medical linear accelerator, a Varian 2300EX medical linear accelerator, equipped with real-time image-guided radiotherapy system, respiratory gating system and PotalDosimetry patient dose’s verification system; there are a series of advanced medical equipment in the department, such as Nucletron 3D Brachytherapy high-dose-rate after-loading therapeutic machine of the latest version(V3(18)TCS3.1.3.800)in Jilin Province, the transport bed with fixed back-feeding source applicator, PHILIPS BrillianceTM Big Bore CT, nuclear magnetic radiotherapy positioning system, U.S. Diacor patient treatment transport system, X-ray simulated locator, Stereotactic radiotherapy equipment (X knife), KL-SIRPS-3D radioactive particle source implantation therapy planning system(TPS), WE7568 Multi-pole radiofrequency tumor ablation system, hyperthermicantiblastic perfusion chemical therapy machine, NRL-004 type of endogenetic field tumor hyperthermia system, microwave hyperthermia and German Carl Zeiss Jena INTRABEAM intraoperative radiation therapy machine. At the same time, department also owns a series of precise quality control verifying equipment, such as OCTAVIUS 4D volume intensity-modulated verification system from PTW, Germany, MP3-M three-dimensional beam scanning analysis system (three-dimensional water tank) and UnidosWebline high-precision dosimeter.

  The department has perfect discipline planning and development direction, and the disciplines are divided into: Head and Neck Group, Chest Group, Gynecological Oncology Group and Minimally Invasive therapy. Three CT and MRI imaging professors from the Radiology Department in hospital were invited to conduct daily consultations on gross tumor volume to ensure medical quality. In 2003, the department took the lead in image-guided three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, and image-guided precise intensity-modulated radiotherapy in Jilin Province. In 2010, three-dimensional conformal brachytherapy and interstitial brachytherapy after-loading therapy were carried out. In 2011, hyperthermic antiblastic perfusion chemotherapy, interstitial brachytherapy, microwave hyperthermia and radiofrequency ablation were performed. In 2013, the nursing group carried out the first case of blind insertion of Seldinger PIDC cathetering in the hospital, and it has reached 350 cases so far. In 2014, the first case of ultrasound’s Seldinger PICC cathetering was undergone in the hospital. In the same year, the minimally invasive tumor platform project of the Second Hospital of Jilin University was awarded more than 34 million Yuan by the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China, and our department received more than 20 million Yuan of subproject funding, updating and purchasing equipment related to micro-invasive treatment of tumor. In addition, intraoperative radiotherapy, such as breast cancer’s breast-conserving surgery, colorectal cancer and bone metastases, has been carried out, which achieved comprehensive treatment of interdisciplinary tumor. And in 2014, in order to further improve the standardized treatment of patients suffering from cancer pain, the “Cancer Pain Standardized Treatment Demonstration Ward” was established in Jilin Province, which won the first place in rating competition of cancer pain’s medical history in Jilin Province, and the second place in three provinces in the northeast of China, becoming a model demonstration unit. In 2016, the department fully upgraded the original Varian linear accelerator, becoming the first radiotherapy center in the northeast of China to have Varian’s new version of 13.5 of radiotherapy treatment planning system and information management system. In the same year, the department also conducted interstitial brachytherapy after-loading therapy based on 3D printing technology, and the individualized and precise treatment of gynecological oncology such as cervical cancer has been realized.

  The department presided over and participated in more than 20 projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of Jilin Province, the Bethune Medical Innovation Fund, the Science and Technology Department Fund of provincial level and city level and Norman Bethune Project of Jilin University, involving more than 3 million Yuan of research funds. The department was awarded five Science and Technology Progress Awards in Jilin Province, one first prize for provincial natural science academic achievement, and more than twenty Medical Productive Awards of Jilin University. The department has published more than 100 papers at civil and abroad, and more than 30 articles collected in SCI. In addition, there are also five editor-in-chief professional works, three works edited by subeditor of department and ten works co-edited by department. Each year, the department not only undertakes 60 hours’ of theoretical teaching and clinical internship work for undergraduates of Radioactive Medicine major at Jilin University, but undertakes teaching tasks of seven-year and eight-year Tumor major. In postgraduate education, 11 doctoral students and more than 80 master students have been trained.

  The department attaches great importance to the training of young talents. Many young physicians, medical physicists and technicians have been sent to Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Science, Peking University Third Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center and other well-known medical institutions for research learning. In 2015 and 2017, there were medical physicists selected to participate in the high-end medical physics talents training project jointly organized by International Exchange and Cooperation Center of National Health and Family Planning Commission and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, making our department the only one in the Northeast China Region, and even a rare tumor radiotherapy institutions in China that has two consecutive medical physicists selected to the project, which strongly highlights the accumulation and strength of our department in the training of young talents. In addition, the department regularly organizes international academic exchanges and cooperation activities, and has established extensive academic exchanges and cooperation studies with the National Cancer Center of Japan, the Radioactive Department of Japan’s Kitasato University, the Radioactive Department of Kyoto University, Okayama University in Japan, and Heidelberg University in Germany.

  The department is committed to build a “Powerful, Courageous, Aggressive and Skilled” radiotherapy technology teem through various ways such as selecting staff for further study, holding academic activities, conducting international exchanges, andstriving for internal strength. The clinical techniques of our department have been continuously improved and medical service capabilities have been continuously enhanced, which has effectively ensured the quality of medical care and medical safety of patients. In the “Innovation Exchange Conference for Hospital Management of the Affiliated Hospital of Jilin University in 2017”, the department was awarded the honorary title of “Bethune advanced group” by Jilin University, which is not only a full affirmation of the department’s medical technology and medical service, but also a great encouragement and spur to the staff in the Second Hospital.

  The achievements belong to the past, and the future is under the foot. The Department of Radiotherapy in Second Hospital of Jilin University is about to celebrate its 60th birthday, with nearly 60 years of practicing medicine in order to help people, and nearly 60 years of cultivating talents. Standing at a new historical starting point, faced with the changing radiation therapy technology and the inspiring era of precision radiotherapy, the staff of the Department of Radiotherapy in Second Hospital of Jilin University will take the lofty aspirations of the people in Jilin University that “the man is higher than mountains, the foot is longer than road. ” and the staff’s spirit of “Knowledgeable, Thoughtful, Sincere and Far-sighted” for seeking in the Second Hospital, and work tirelessly against cancer, striving for providing the most advanced medical technology and the best medical services for the majority of cancer patients! With the concern and support of leaders at all levels and colleagues in the radiotherapy department inside and outside the province, the staff in department are forging ahead, pioneering and innovative, getting united and striving for excellence, so as to inherit and carry forward Bethune’s spirit with practical actions. Remaining true to original aspiration and forging ahead, the new glory of Tumor Radiotherapy in Second Hospital of Jilin University would continue to be written!
